The Internet of Plants. A cross section through a mycorrhizal fungal conduit through which plants communicate with each other. Demonstrates the complexity and rate of vegetal information transfer.
To produce this, I dug a small trench in a local woodland, and introduced a circular slab of microbiological media which was selective for fungi. I then covered the trench, and after a week, during which the mycorrhizal fungal penetrated the agar to reestablish a connection with the fungi on the other side of the agar, I removed it, and next imaged it using long wavelength ultraviolet light. The colours result from the natural fluorescence of the fungi.
